Starting from the beginning of 2020, the whole world economy has been shocked by COVID-19: Flavor and Fragrances industry cannot be spared. Among all the difficulties this pandemic created, it is easy to realize that the business is facing a very artful challenge, in which problems are coming both from supply and demand side.

The general world situation in a glance:

Currently, due to the constant changing of the situation, it is difficult to find reliable statistics regarding the flavor and fragrances market. However, we worked on the data coming from related industries in order to develop an accurate estimate.

Regarding the food field, according to IRI’s grocery report, during week 12, Italy experienced a growth in consumption of pastry ingredient by 135.8%, alcohol by 120.1% and prepared mix for cakes by 119.5%. In France, consumption of cooked dishes increased by 186.6%. In the UK canned food including meat, vegetables, fruit etc. increased by more than 150%. The situation is similar in all European countries. The report also showed that the demand of packaged food is stabilizing, meanwhile there are data saying that shoppers have been buying more and more organic food since the fear of the Corona virus took hold in their country. In general, with these numbers we could say that the flavor industry could easily see a growth until May and should not experience a large reduction in the short future.

In fragrances field, big players are converting their perfume facilities to produce hand sanitizer. In the meantime, consumption of perfume and cosmetic is also expected to decrease. However, the top categories increased according to IRI’s report include soap, sanitary cleaner in which fragrances ingredients are used.

On the supply side, more than one month of lock down in China has caused a shortage of materials such as Ethyl vanillin, vanillin, ethyl butyrate and derivatives.  From the beginning of March, the supply returned to normal with a slightly increased price and the delivery times tend to be much longer, in which a good planning is necessary.

India’s lock down has created a limited supply of Indian featured products. Cicloverdyl Acetate and Propionate, Benzyl salicylate, Cinnamic Aldehyde, Cinnamicl alcohol, Phenyl ethyl alcohol, Styrallyl Acetate, Diphenyloxide, Cyclamen Aldehyde, OTBCHA, PTBCHA, Coumarin, Carvacrol and Thymol are very short. Menthol crystal price increased by USD2/kg since the lockdown. It is still not clear the lockdown influence on the mint planting. Anyone who acts in mint market should keep a close eye on the market.

Gum turpentine derivatives were already limited during China’s lockdown and the India’s one caused a sharp contraction in supply. The price of pinene, terpineol, terpinyl acetate and ISO-E-Super has increased significantly. This is another category to watch carefully.
